Save Money and Reduce Waste: How to Remove and Reuse Wax Melts

Published on 2 July 2025 at 09:00

So, your wax melt has filled the room with its gorgeous scent — now what? If the fragrance has faded but the wax is still sitting in your burner, don’t worry. Removing and even reusing wax melts is easier than you might think. Here’s everything you need to know to make clean-up simple, mess-free, and even a little bit eco-friendly.

When to Remove a Wax Melt

Soy wax doesn’t evaporate like a candle — it stays in the burner, even once the scent has faded. When you can no longer smell the fragrance, that’s your sign it’s time to switch it out for something fresh.

Saving Wax Melts with Scent Left

Sometimes, at the end of a 4-hour burn, your wax melt still has plenty of fragrance left — and that’s absolutely fine! You don’t need to let it run until the scent disappears completely in one go. Once the wax has cooled and hardened, simply twist and pop it out of the burner, then wrap it up and store it somewhere cool and dry to use another day. I do this often — I’ve got a little stash of round discs I’ve saved from previous burns, ready to go again until the fragrance has completely faded.

The Twist & Pop Method (Our Favourite Way!)

At Vashti Aromas, this is our go-to method. As our soy wax melts cool, they often crack slightly around the edges and naturally loosen from the burner dish. Here’s how to remove them with ease: Let the wax cool and harden completely. You’ll usually notice it starting to lift slightly at the edges. Gently twist the edge of the wax — it normally pops straight out in one clean piece. Quick, simple, and no mess left behind.

Other Easy Ways to Remove Old Wax

If the wax hasn’t popped out on its own, here are a couple of other gentle methods you can try:

1. Cotton Pad Method
Light your tealight for about 30 seconds — just enough to soften the wax slightly. Blow out the flame, then place cotton pads or some kitchen roll in the dish to soak up the melted wax. Wipe clean and you're ready for a new scent.

2. Warm & Pour Method
Light your tealight for a minute or two until the wax begins to melt. Carefully pour the liquid wax into a lined bin or an old jar (never down the sink). Wipe out the burner dish with a paper towel while it's still warm — but not hot.

Can You Reuse Old Wax Melts?

Yes — even once the scent has faded, there’s still a bit of life left in your wax. Here are a few gentle, eco-conscious ways to reuse it: Drawer fresheners: Pop the used wax into a little cotton bag or organza pouch to subtly scent your wardrobe or drawers.

Disposing of Wax the Right Way

When your wax has truly had its day, dispose of it safely: Let it cool and harden fully. Wrap it in paper or a compostable bag. Pop it in your household waste bin.

⚠️ Never pour melted wax down the sink — it can solidify in your pipes and cause blockages.
